A second chance for Neha
Neha Kumari Berma is a 25-year-old female from Rautahat, Nepal. She has been living with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), with significant mitral valve involvement which required timely cardiac intervention to prevent further disease progression and functional decline.
Because of the chronic nature of her illness and the likelihood of needing an invasive procedure, Neha felt significant fear and reluctance about moving forward with treatment. She was especially concerned about the risks involved.
Dr. Prakash Raj Regmi counseled Neha on the nature of her disease, the risks of delaying treatment, and the importance of timely care. This early conversation helped her better understand her condition and begin preparing mentally for further evaluation and treatment.
Neha’s situation was further complicated by limited family and social support. After sharing her diagnosis, misconceptions about RHD within her family and community, led to social discrimination and emotional neglect. As a result, she relocated to Kathmandu, where she now lives with her brother, who provides financial support and helps manager her care.
At Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre (SGNHC), Neha underwent a comprehensive cardiac assessment and received continued counseling from the cardiology team. They reinforced earlier discussions, addressed her fears, and guided her through the available treatment options. After multidisciplinary evaluation, a less invasive treatment approach was identified, and Neha agreed to move forward.
With support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, Neha received treatment on 8 April 2025. The procedure was completed successfully without immediate complications, and her condition improved afterward. She tolerated the treatment well and was discharged with appropriate follow-up care.
Neha’s story highlights the importance of early counseling, thoughtful clinical decision-making, and access to minimally invasive cardiac care – especially for young patients facing both medical and social challenges.
