Job Posting Description
Innovation starts from the heart. At Edwards Lifesciences, we’re dedicated to developing ground-breaking technologies with a genuine impact on patients’ lives. At the core of this commitment is our investment in cutting-edge information technology. This supports our innovation and collaboration on a global scale, enabling our diverse teams to optimize both efficiency and success. As part of our IT team, your expertise and commitment will help facilitate our patient-focused mission by developing and enhancing technological solutions.
This is a hands-on architect role within our Insights Engineering team, responsible for the design, performance, and long-term health of the consumption layer that powers analytics at Edwards. You'll set the standard for how semantic and tabular models are built across Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and Azure Analysis Services, own performance architecture across both modern and legacy analytics workloads, and be the trusted technical advisor the team turns to when models need to scale. Success here is measured by the trust the business places in our analytics, the speed at which insights reach decision-makers, and the quality of the architecture left behind for the team to build on.
You'll be the architecture authority for the analytics consumption layer within our Enterprise Data, Analytics & AI Integration (EDAIx) organization. Sitting inside the Insights Engineering tower, you'll own the architecture, performance, and standards behind semantic models, tabular models, and the dimensional structures that power enterprise reporting at Edwards. You'll be a guiding force for the team. That means setting direction, giving recommendations, troubleshooting alongside developers, and moving fluidly across projects to keep delivery on track. This is a working architect role for someone who enjoys the craft, collaborates openly, and takes pride in building solutions that perform.
How you will make an impact:
Architecture and Design
- Lead the design of enterprise grade semantic and tabular models across Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and Azure Analysis Services, with a focus on reusability, governance, and long term maintainability.
- Architect dimensional models (star schema, snowflake where appropriate) that support both modern tabular workloads and legacy OLAP cube structures still in production.
- Define and evolve standards for model design, naming conventions, calculation groups, row level security, deployment pipelines, and lifecycle management.
- Evaluate and recommend the right consumption pattern for each business problem, including Import, DirectQuery, Direct Lake, composite models, and aggregations.
Performance Architecture and Optimization
- Own performance tuning across the analytics stack, from source query design through VertiPaq compression, DAX measure efficiency, MDX query patterns, and refresh strategy.
- Diagnose and resolve performance issues in tabular models, multidimensional cubes, and report queries using tools such as DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, VertiPaq Analyzer, and SQL Profiler.
- Establish and enforce performance benchmarks, monitoring practices, and capacity planning approaches for Power BI Premium, Fabric, and Azure Analysis Services workloads.
- Guide partitioning, aggregation, incremental refresh, and storage mode decisions for large and high concurrency models.
Hands-On Technical Leadership
- Author advanced DAX and MDX, complex Power Query (M) transformations, and T-SQL for high performance analytics.
- Build proof of concept models that demonstrate the right architectural approach for new business problems, then transition them to the development team.
- Review and provide technical guidance on semantic models and report architecture built by developers across Insights Engineering and partner towers.
- Contribute directly to high priority initiatives, including the Power BI Center of Excellence and the broader Lakehouse consumption strategy.
Collaboration and Team Enablement
- Serve as the technical sounding board for developers, analysts, and other architects across EDAIx. Give recommendations openly and avoid working in isolation.
- Move comfortably across projects, jumping in to help unblock the team, troubleshoot live issues, and pair on complex modeling problems.
- Partner with Data Engineering, Data Product, and Data Governance to shape upstream data structures that make downstream analytics simpler and faster.
- Translate architectural decisions into clear documentation, patterns, and reusable templates the team can adopt without ambiguity.
Standards, Governance, and Quality
- Define and enforce semantic layer governance, including certified datasets, metric definitions, version control, and release standards.
- Champion architectural quality, technical craftsmanship, and accountability for what the team puts into production.
- Stay current with the Microsoft analytics roadmap (Fabric, Direct Lake, Copilot for Power BI, semantic link) and bring forward recommendations on adoption.
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in business intelligence, analytics engineering, or data architecture, with meaningful time spent in an architect level capacity.
- Deep hands on expertise with Power BI semantic models, including advanced DAX, Power Query (M), and Tabular Editor.
- Strong experience designing and tuning tabular models in Azure Analysis Services or SQL Server Analysis Services.
- Working knowledge of multidimensional OLAP cubes and MDX, with the ability to support and modernize legacy cube workloads.
- Proven experience designing dimensional models (star schema, fact and dimension design, slowly changing dimensions, aggregations).
- Strong SQL skills for data profiling, query design, and source side optimization.
- Demonstrated success diagnosing and resolving complex performance issues across the BI stack.
What else we look for:
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Direct Lake, OneLake, and Lakehouse based consumption architectures.
- Experience integrating Power BI with Snowflake, Databricks, Azure Synapse, or Azure SQL.
- Familiarity with CI/CD for analytics (Git, TMDL, deployment pipelines, Tabular Editor automation).
- Exposure to Power BI Embedded, Power BI REST APIs, and tenant or capacity administration.
- Experience working in regulated industries such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or healthcare.
- Experience contributing to or operating a Power BI Center of Excellence
- Strong troubleshooting instincts and the patience to find the real root cause, not just the visible symptom.
- Confident communicator who can explain complex modeling and performance concepts to both engineers and business stakeholders.
- Comfortable jumping between projects, shifting context quickly, and supporting the team where the need is greatest.
- Collaborative by default, with a track record of mentoring developers and elevating the work of the people around them.
- High standards for craftsmanship, documentation, and delivery quality.
- Clear point of view on tool selection, with the judgment to recommend the right approach for each problem rather than defaulting to a single technology.
- Comfortable working across global time zones and partnering with team members in Prague, Pune, Irvine, and other Edwards locations.
- Adheres to all company rules and requirements, including Environmental Health and Safety standards, and takes responsibility for protecting people and the environment within their area of control.
