Funding will help to support a nine-month transitional housing program where Orange County residents focus on debt repayment, budgeting, and a savings plan with the goal of helping families build life skills that will assist them in obtaining and maintaining permanent, adequate housing.

Funds will be used to expand Angel Flight West’s capacity to serve residents and healthcare providers with free air transportation in response to healthcare and other needs in Southern California.

This grant will enable at-risk homeless children sheltered in hotels and low-income housing access to services and youth development programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Anaheim, California offering the hope of a positive future outside of poverty.

These funds will help support SMART (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) Moves, a program that helps young people in Salt Lake City, Utah resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by addressing the critical needs among youth, such as basic life and social skills, conflict resolution, health, fitness and self-esteem.

This grant will support the development and publication of a curriculum resource piece specifically structured for elementary students in California that introduces science and research topics.

These funds will help underwrite the cost of a program for Orange County students in 5th grade through high school to learn about the human heart during the dissection of a pig’s heart. Through this program students make connections between the model of the human heart and the actual heart.

Funds will be utilized to support the operation of a pediatric down syndrome program at Children's Hospital of Orange County, which will include a weekly outpatient clinic.

This organization will use funding to provide scholarships to high school students in Puerto Rico that have an interest in the medical field. This grant will help provide Girl Scouting to girls in Santa Ana, California who come from low-income families by offering education, personal development and fun activities that encompass leadership development, math and financial literacy, healthy living, self-awareness, goal setting, community service, the importance of education and career exploration and planning, and healthy relationships.

Funding will be used to provide materials needed for hand-made knitted caps that will be given free to people battling cancer or other life threatening illnesses around the world.

Funding will help to provide 24-hour hotline/crisis intervention, food, clothing, individual and family counseling, life-skills training, legal advocacy and housing assistance to Orange County women and their children who are fleeing family violence and would otherwise become homeless.

These funds will help support the Orange County 2010 March of Dimes fundraising walk, March for Babies, working to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
MIND Research

Funds for this program support a five-year initiative that addresses the underachievement of 164 schools in 20 different school districts throughout Orange County, which score in the lowest three deciles of California's Academic Performance Index.

Miracle Flights for Kids will use these funds to provide free access for children suffering from cardiovascular disease to medical facilities throughout the U.S. through the purchase of airline tickets and by coordinating the airline scheduling and commercial flight medical clearance requirements.

Funds will be used for the revitalization of neglected community athletic infrastructure to facilitate educational and leadership building programs for disadvantaged youth in Santa Ana, California.

“In-Home Parent Empowerment” ($8,000)
Funds will help to provide parenting educational services to families in Orange County identified as being at-risk for child abuse and family violence. This program has shown success in the areas of increased communication skills, anger management techniques, appropriate discipline and knowledge regarding child development and safety needs.

“At-Promise Youth Program” ($5,000)
These funds will support a program that educates participating youth in Orange County on the destructive consequences of gangs, drugs, and other risky behaviors, while endeavoring to raise the participant’s self-worth through purpose finding lessons.

These funds will help offer a free 12-week session of classes to low-income Santa Ana, California children in grades four through six in dance, music, creative writing and visual arts.

Funding will be used to coordinate and mobilize more than 1,200 Orange County volunteers into 47 nonprofit agencies that utilize senior volunteers to provide much needed skills and labor to vital community organizations.

Funds will provide one-on-one peer support to ensure that individual and specific patient needs are met and personalized information is provided to adult congenital heart patients and their family members nationally.
Alliance for Aging Research
“Raising Awareness of Valvular Disease and Treatment in a Disproportionately Impacted Population” ($25,000)
Funding of this program will assist in addressing valve disease in the African American population in the U.S., targeting both physicians and patients in an effort to raise awareness of the prevalence of valve diseases, encourage diagnosis and optimal treatment, and promote effective patient-physician education. The program will also address the link between valve disease and obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other diseases and conditions.
American Heart Association
“CPR Anytime” ($25,000)
This grant will fund the distribution of 250 CPR Anytime kits, an innovative personal kit for learning CPR in 22 minutes, to local community clinics, schools or hospitals in Orange County.
Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation
“Direct Family Assistance” ($15,000)
The funds will support a program that will provide relief for urgent expenses to single parent and other financially distressed low-income and under-served families in several states across the U.S. during a child's catastrophic illness, enabling these caregivers to stay by their child's side during this period of desperation.
Angel Heart International
“Mending Young Hearts in Gansu” ($25,000)
These funds will support under-served families with children born with life-threatening congenital heart defects in Gansu Province, China. The program provides access to appropriate medical treatment, a support group to enhance communication and awareness and medical information for volunteer physicians.
Aspirus
“Heart Valve Screening Program” ($17,370)
This grant will support Aspirus' “Heart Valve Screening Program” for seniors 65 and older in Michigan and Wisconsin, which is provided at no cost as part of their multidisciplinary valve clinic that promotes cardiovascular awareness and education.
Bon Secours Richmond Foundation
“Bon Secours Surgical Services Minimally Invasive Training Facility” ($25,000)
This grant will help to establish a minimally invasive surgical training facility in Richmond, Virginia to support acceleration of surgical knowledge and next generation technologies.
California Society for Cardiac Rehabilitation
“SCSCR Fall Regional Conference: Getting to the Heart of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery: Hybrid OR/Robotics/Percutaneous Valves” ($1,000)
These funds will support a conference at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California involving an estimated 100 participants, which will focus on new technology, including hybrid operating room, robotics and percutaneous heart valves.

“Healing Hearts Worldwide” ($50,000)
Funding will support the global efforts to treat children born with congenital heart disease and to prevent the spread of heart disease in childhood from rheumatic fever by increasing the number of training opportunities provided to partner hospitals in developing countries such as India, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa, Kenya, Ukraine, Brazil and Ecuador.

"Lifestyle 180" ($25,000)
Funding will support a one-year program in East Cleveland, Ohio to reverse cardiovascular disease by structured lifestyle modification involving nutrition, physical activity and stress management sessions.
Columbia University Department of Surgery
“COACH Online Training Module: Cardiac Interventional and Cardiac Surgery Sections Build Outs” ($25,000)
The funds will be used to help create an extensive, online, interactive, “living textbook” employing surgical videos, image libraries and knowledge measurement tools for the purpose of building a cardiac interventional and surgery section, focusing on valve repairs and replacement in the open heart as well as cardiac interventional areas.
Conemaugh Health Foundation
“Diabetes-Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program” ($35,000)
Funding will enable a continuation of a program that provides education, screening and early detection of patients who are at risk for diabetes-related cardiovascular disease in the underserved communities of western Pennsylvania. Education includes activities and lifestyle changes know to limit the progression of this disease.
Foundation for the Advancement of Cardiothoracic Surgical Care
“Expansion of Regional Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care Courses and Online Education” ($50,000)
This grant will provide funding for the extension of regional CVT Critical Care Courses to the University of California, Los Angeles. It will also support expansion of the educational Web site including links to new instructive programs such as simulations of inserting latest monitoring technology and implanting transcatheter valvular devices.
Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
“NIH/FDA Exhibition: The Issue Was Patients - Developing Heart Valve Replacements” ($25,000)
This grant will support an exhibition on heart valve development and evolution, housed at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, in addition to traveling and online components that will echo and expand upon its content, making the exhibition available to virtual visitors worldwide.
Heart to Heart International Children's Medical Alliance
“Into the Heartland Campaign” ($50,000)
Funding will enable the development of five self-sustaining pediatric cardiac centers throughout Russia, giving children access to modern heart care.
HeartGift Foundation
“HeartGift” ($50,000)
Funding will allow this Texas-based organization to provide lifesaving open heart surgery for children from countries where medical intervention is scarce or nonexistent. Physicians, surgeons, cardiologists and community volunteers donate their time and service to make this care available at no charge to these children.
Hoag Hospital Foundation
“Heart Valve Screening and Education for Orange County Seniors” ($50,000)
This grant will provide the resources necessary to screen Orange County seniors over the age of 65 for the presence or absence of valve disease using the latest 3-D echo imaging technology and access to cardiovascular nurses and other staff for education.
International Children's Heart Foundation
“Pediatric Cardiac Services for Santiago, Dominican Republic” ($50,000)
Funding will support the ongoing initiatives for developing an independent pediatric cardiac surgical program in the Dominican Republic. The team travels to the Dominican Republic four times a year, operating on infants and children with heart defects. Additionally, local physicians, perfusionists and nurses are trained in pediatric cardiac surgery. Local technicians are trained in the catheterization and echocardiography labs as well as in perfusion services and respiratory therapy.
International College of Robotic Surgery
“International College of Robotic Surgery Training Curriculum Programs” ($15,000)
Funding will support training in minimally invasive and robotic intracardiac surgery and robotic cardiac revascularization surgery at the International College of Robotic Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia. Robotic surgeons and their respective teams are guided through a systematic and comprehensive clinical pathway until complete proficiency is achieved.
International Hospital for Children
“Dominican Hearts Program: Sustainability Phase” ($25,000)
Funds will be used to develop and implement a comprehensive pediatric cardiac training program and to establish a stand-alone, sustainable pediatric heart program in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Medical College of Virginia Foundation
“Multi-Island Outreach for Cardiac Screening for Congenital and Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease”
($25,000)
Funding will support screening and diagnostic services by portable cardiac diagnostic technology to the children of St. Vincent and St. Lucia. Children diagnosed with rheumatic fever will be prioritized for surgical intervention through International Hospital for Children and U.S. partner hospitals.
Memorial Hermann Foundation
“Memorial Family Medicine Residency/Communication of Cardiac Risk to Underserved Women” ($25,000)
Funds will be used in Houston, Texas to conduct a study of 120 underserved women aged 35 to 74 who are identified as high-risk for cardiovascular disease. Patients gain insights into their perception of their risk for heart disease, and use this knowledge to modify their behavior in nutrition and lifestyle to mitigate their risk for heart disease.
Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation
“Girls and Moms on the Move” ($25,000)
This funding will support a comprehensive six-part workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota for young girls and their mothers on the value of a heart healthy lifestyle. The program is focused on preventing obesity through improved physical activity levels, healthier food choices, development of a positive body image and increased self-efficacy for maintaining these behaviors.
National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease
“National Leadership Program” ($25,000)
This grant will support the Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which trains patient-volunteers from across the county to conduct heart disease education and outreach in the communities where they live.
National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Serving the National Capital Area (NCA)
“Chronic Care Initiative” ($25,000)
Funds will support a program to screen, educate and provide education to high-risk minority populations in the mid-Atlantic region. The NKF/NCA will test 600 participants through free community health screenings and will host six patient education seminars in 2010.
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
“6th Annual Saint Barnabas Health Care System Cardiovascular Symposium” ($5,000)
These funds will support a one-day independent medical education cardiovascular symposium in New Jersey for cardiologists and other healthcare professionals who treat patients with cardiovascular disease, including risk management of diabetes and other related conditions.
New York-Presbyterian Hospital
“Free Community Cardiovascular Health Screening” ($25,000)
These funds will support 27 community-based free health screening events in New York, which aim to connect underserved populations to cardiovascular health promotion, disease prevention and primary care services.
OCTANe Foundation for Innovation
“Science Education and Innovation Development” ($25,000)
The funds will enable OCTANe to educate 1,500 people at the Fourth Annual California Medical Device and Investor Forum in Southern California through six educational panel discussions and a dedicated cardiovascular track. OCTANe also provides a collaborative environment where experts from all aspects of the innovation lifecycle can engage by mentoring and training medical device entrepreneurs and start-ups.
Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance
“Second Annual Cardiovascular Symposium” ($2,500)
The funding will be used to support a cardiovascular symposium in Torrance, California for professionals in the cardiovascular field. The goal is to give the audience insight into new procedures and management of patients with cardiovascular disease providing them with a fresh understanding of advancements in this field.
Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation
“Year 2 Research Fellow: Outcome Research in Starr Academic Center to Improve Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease” ($50,000)
This grant will continue to support a research fellow at Providence St. Vincent Medical in Portland, Oregon to “mine” the cardiac database in the Medical Data Research Center, to improve outcomes for heart patients. Results will include scientific publications and presentations for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, nurses, technical health professionals, and bioengineers throughout the world.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
“Interdisciplinary Research Collaborative (IRC)” ($25,000)
This grant provides undergraduate student research in Terre Haute, Indiana in the biological and chemical sciences in a 10-week, full-time program that offers students the opportunity to perform original research beyond what is available during limited classroom and laboratory time. This program will teach them skills required to become better practicing scientists, engineers, or medical professionals.
Russian American Medical Association
“Siberian Pediatric Heart Project” ($10,000)
The funds will be used to establish and support the development of a full-service pediatric and congenital heart surgery program and advancement of adult cardiac surgery program in Kemerovo, Siberia, Russia, providing cardiovascular care for a population of over three and a half million people.

This grant supports full scope medical care to uninsured Orange County residents living in poverty, including 1,100 patients with a chronic disease.
Society for Women's Health Research
“What a Difference an X Makes - Part II” ($35,000)
Society for Women's Health Research of Washington, D.C. will use these funds for their conference reviewing the progress of the last 20 years in several key areas of women’s health: pain, cancer, stroke, cardiac diagnostics and surgery, infectious diseases, depression and autoimmune diseases.
St. Joseph Hospital of Orange
“From the Heart” ($25,000)
St. Joseph Hospital of Orange will use these funds to provide cardiac screens via mobile medical clinics at locations throughout Orange County. The comprehensive cardiac screen identifies individuals at high-risk for a cardiac event.
St. Paul's Hospital Foundation of Vancouver
“McLeod Family Professorship in Valvular Heart Disease Intervention” ($50,000)
The funds will be used to improve existing resources, expand clinical research services and develop an internationally recognized program in the management of valvular heart disease in British Columbia and beyond. Funds will also help to further the development of a cutting edge transcatheter valve program, as well as the education and training of fellows, cardiologists, surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses.
Stanford University Biodesign Program
“Biodesign Innovation Program” ($25,000)
This grant will support The Biodesign Fellowship Program in Palo Alto, California, which trains next-generation leaders in biomedical technology innovation. The fellows proceed through a complete cycle of concept development, leading to real innovations that are brought forward into patient care.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association
“2010 Nicaragua Program” ($50,000)
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association will use these funds to develop a nationwide program that will train 100 community volunteers and advocates how to execute a grassroots education campaign in their communities dedicated to preventing cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death.
Surgeons of Hope Foundation
“2010 Nicaragua Program” ($50,000)
The funds provide support of two pediatric cardiac surgery missions in Nicaragua to improve access to modern surgical care for indigent children with heart disease as well as rehabilitation of the operating ICU facilities at La Mascota Children’s Hospital, and development of a pediatric cardiac unit at the hospital.
The Larry King Cardiac Foundation
“Save A Heart A Day” ($50,000)
Funds will support the organization’s goal to "Save A Heart A Day." The foundation provides life-saving cardiac care to uninsured individuals by directly providing medical procedures and therapies in U.S. who would otherwise be unable to receive the cardiac-related surgeries and care they so desperately need. The foundation partners with physicians and hospitals around the country to minimize the costs of these life-saving procedures.
The Mended Hearts
“Mended Little Hearts” ($25,000)
This grant supports a nationwide program that provides education and access to needed resources to under-served families who have children with congenital heart defects assisting them to make informed decisions about care.
The Sepsis Alliance
“SA 12-Month Agenda” ($50,000)
Funding will support Code Sepsis, a four-hour interactive, virtual reality, Web-based training for critical care management of septic events in the intensive care unit and for the Surviving Sepsis Campaign representing research, clinical, public heath, industry, philanthropy, government and information technology.
University of Southern California
“Heart Failure 2010 - An Update on Therapy: Heart Failure, Arrhythmias, Hypertension” ($7,000)
Funds will support this one-day symposium in Southern California designed to educate cardiologists, internists, primary care physicians and other healthcare providers by presenting evidence-based information, published guidelines and current standards of care enabling them to improve their competency and efficiency in the prevention and treatment of heart failure, arrhythmias and hypertension.
University of Virginia
“Cedimat Dominican Republic Rheumatic Heart Disease Mission” ($50,000)
These funds will be used to support two medical and teaching missions in 2010 enabling the sustained delivery of screening cardiology clinics and therapeutic options for rheumatic heart disease in underserved populations in the Dominican Republic. Funds will also be used to educate U.S. cardiology trainees to initiate and sustain humanitarian medical missions to impoverished patient populations.
Walter Sisulu Pediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa ($15,000)
These funds will be used to support cardiac surgery for underprivileged children of Africa who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. The Centre has already provided successful cardiac intervention procedures to more than 320 children in Africa. Additionally, the program will offer education, training and skills development to the medical community on the African continent.
