Jessica has always loved horses, and enjoyed a healthy childhood until age eight, when her doctor discovered a problem with her mitral heart valve.

“As I got older, I started noticing that things just weren't quite right,” said Jessica. “My heart would race and it would go into irregular rhythms.”

At age 22, Jessica needed urgent surgical treatment, and in August of 2006, she underwent mitral valve repair surgery. Her surgeon selected the IMR ETlogix annuloplasty ring because he felt it would best treat the asymmetry in her mitral valve.

“The minute I came home, everything turned around. I got healthy, and I started feeling better,” Jessica said. Inspired by her experiences as a patient, she began studying echocardiography.

Edwards' valve repair products allow surgeons to tailor patients' therapies to address their anatomies or disease states. Patrick McCarthy, M.D., one of the creators of the IMR ETlogix ring, said, “By better understanding heart valve disease, we have been able to create a unique solution that meets specific patient needs. Edwards' IMR ETlogix ring represents an innovative option for patients with misshapen mitral valves.”
