Henry has had many roles during his 95 years: Navy captain, school business manager, devoted husband, father and grandfather. While caring full-time for his wife of 69 years, Henry was diagnosed with aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the valve that restricts blood flow. He worried that the surgical treatment would interfere with the care of his wife.
In 2007, after missing his grandson's high school graduation, he decided to pursue treatment. In August, Henry received the Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter aortic heart valve implanted with the RetroFlex delivery system as part of a U.S. clinical trial. He returned home less than a week later.
Henry's doctor, Augusto Pichard, M.D., is proud to offer his patients in the clinical trial an option that previously did not exist. “I believe the Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter valve is unique thanks to years of dedicated research and work,” said Dr. Pichard.
