Larry King Thanks Valve Seamstress for
'Gift of Life'
On January 10, 2008, Larry King visited Edwards Lifesciences accompanied by Gloria Briones, an underserved patient who received free cardiac surgery and an Edwards pericardial heart valve thanks to the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, The Edwards Lifesciences Fund and its other supporters. During their visit, Briones met the sewers of her valve and King addressed more than 1000 Edwards employees at a company meeting. This special event is detailed in an article published on January 11, 2008 in the Orange County Register.

Saving Lives Despite Low Profits
In an article in the Orange County Register on December 19, 2007, Carlyn Solomon, corporate vice president, Critical Care, and others discuss the development of the PediaSat oximetry catheter. The article focuses on the passion of Edwards employees to develop this product to help save the lives of critically ill children despite the comparatively small market opportunity and less than compelling economics.

Race Against Time Treating Patients with Sepsis Community MedWatch, produced by Community Medical Centers and shown on KSEE Channel 24, discusses how the use of Edwards PreSep oximetry catheter helps in treating patients with Sepsis and features a unique patient story. This 4:20 minute segment of the television show was featured in November 2007.

Edwards' partners Starr, Carpentier receive 2007 Albert Lasker Award
Dr. Albert Starr (near right) and Prof. Alain Carpentier, M.D., (far right) have been honored for their development of artificial heart valves with the 2007 Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research, as detailed in The New York Times and USA Today. Dr. Starr, working with the late engineer and founder of Edwards Lifesciences, Lowell Edwards, invented the first successful artificial heart valve in 1958; Prof. Carpentier's work in the 1960s with porcine-tissue valves led to the adoption of using animal valves in humans. The Lasker Awards are the United States' most distinguished honor for outstanding contributions to basic and clinical medical research, as well as for outstanding public service on behalf of medical research.
