Edwards' partners Starr, Carpentier receive 2007 Albert Lasker Award
Dr. Albert Starr (near right) and Prof. Alain Carpentier, M.D., (far right) have been honored for their development of artificial heart valves with the 2007 Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research, as detailed in The New York Times and USA Today. Dr. Starr, working with the late engineer and founder of Edwards Lifesciences, Lowell Edwards, invented the first successful artificial heart valve in 1958; Prof. Carpentier's work in the 1960s with porcine-tissue valves led to the adoption of using animal valves in humans. The Lasker Awards are the United States' most distinguished honor for outstanding contributions to basic and clinical medical research, as well as for outstanding public service on behalf of medical research. |
